[Issued by Rushcliffe Borough Council]
It is understood that The Crown Estate have written to local councillors on Friday 20th June informing them that the three major land owners of the former RAF Newton site (Defence Estates, Newton Nottingham LLP and The Crown Estate), have sent a submission to the Department for Communities and Local Government with their proposals for an Eco-town at the former RAF Newton site.
The Crown Estate have confirmed they wish to consult fully upon the principle of an Eco-town scheme and how this may meet future housing needs in Rushcliffe. It is also understood that the three landowners will be launching a website during the week commencing 23 June (www.newtonecotown.com). When this is available a link will be made on the Rushcliffe website to ensure local residents have a full opportunity to feedback.
Neil Clarke leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council said: ‘‘This is the first indication we have had from the land owners that they intend to place a submission with DCLG. It is important we fully listen to their ideas; however I remain fully committed to ensuring that no scheme would be successful without the significant infrastructure that is required in the RAF Newton area being agreed before any development can take place. To that end I am demanding a meeting with the relevant ministers as soon as possible to seek the reassurances we require in respect of securing the dualling of the A46, as well as improvements to the A52, rail improvements and community facilities for Bingham in line with the resolution of the extraordinary council meeting held on Thursday 8th May 2008’’
Also in line with the resolution this matter will now be referred to the Council’s Local Development Framework Group for its consideration.
